I’m A Finalist In the Irish Blog Awards 2013 – Yay!

Hi gang! Firstly, I’m sorry I’ve been so quiet on the posting front for the past 10 days — things have been slightly crazy with work lately; I recently was involved in some very exciting things in terms of my writing, and have been busy with this as well as working in the news room etc but I’m trying to get back into the regular posting over the next few weeks.

This post is just a quick one to express my general happiness that I was announced as one of five finalists in the Best Blog Design category in this year’s Blog Awards Ireland 2013, woo hoo! I had to get through quite a few rounds to get here, so I just want to thank all the judges who thought the site was pretty enough to get into the final rounds. 😉 The Blog Awards ceremony takes place on October 12th, and it’ll be exciting to see who takes home the prizes, as so many of my favourite sites are entered this year.

As I’m nominated in the ‘Best Blog Design‘ category, I’ll just tell you a little about how the design came about.  Myself and my amazingly talented website designer, Heather of Viva La Violette (check out her portfolio and blog on her website, her work is really so beautiful), basically came up with the initial design together. I knew I wanted particular colour scheme, I wanted it to be bright and cheerful and feminine without going too overboard (i.e not completely covered in pink love hearts). It is essentially a lifestyle website and lighthearted in terms of the content (a stark contrast to my work in the newsroom, which is undoubtedly more serious), and I think the design reflects this in the best way.

I knew, being a journalist that I wanted a little typewriter in the logo, so that’s what we went with, and it’s one of my favourite elements of the site design. I also made sure everything looked clean and easily accessible in terms of different categories, so that when you’re having a gander around, it’s easy to find what you want. All the little added tweaks and elements were thanks to Heather; she took my initial design and really turned it into something very unique and very me, so thank you so much Heather!  I’m thrilled that so many have told me that they love the design (and hopefully the content just as much!). Also thanks to equally fabulous Irish blogger Aoife over at A Little Infinity for designing the new social media banners you’ll see on the sidebar – I heart them!
